Overview:
Florans are a well known race galaxy-wide, and while simple-thinking in their own respect, their collective strength and wit is one to be feared. Most nations vaguely recognize the Floran "empire", as it's spread wide and it's colonies are often fraught with infighting even near their home planet, but none-the-less their tribal nature allows them to rally under a cause quickly and start flash wars with little to no warning to other nations. As such, they're typically viewed with distaste by other cultures, especially the hylotl who were victims of their failed conquests. Even now, they expand their numbers and borders rapidly without regard for the other countries they could be intruding upon...
Physiology:
Florans, unlike their name suggests, are actually insectoid beasts, notable by their matte, chitinous exteriors and sharp, mantis-like jaws. Suggested by their classification, the Florans lack internal skeletons; Instead, they rely on intricately detailed exoskeletons for natural camouflage and protection from small blades and teeth. Despite this, they tend to be fairly muscled, though nothing above an apex or such- More of a runner's frame than a weightlifter's.
Florans are typically smaller than other races, averaging at 5'2", while some may be bigger or smaller. They tend to be quiet on their feet, with a light step, which suits their method of hunting well; Usually, a Floran in it's natural habitat will hunt at night, blending in with their surroundings due to it's exoskeleton. Most Florans can see well in the dark, and have adjusting pupils (like a cat's) to adjust to any amount of light, which suits their hunting lifestyle well; Florans cannot eat plants.
Floran tribes hunt incessantly, spreading in hunting camps around the planets they settle, but due to their somewhat dim intellect, without a strong leader, will ultimately let their appetite outrun their sustainability. Florans must eat quite a bit compared to other races- Their metabolism is two to three times as potent as other races. In addition to this, Florans have the ability to regenerate lost limbs over a week or so, but must eat enough to be able to do this- Which is expensive to buy said food or fairly taxing to be able to hunt enough to eat with one arm, so most tribal Florans that lose a limb aren't able to regenerate them in a timely manner.
Florans are deadly allergic to alcohol, and cannot drink any; Same goes with most plants, though it will only make them extremely sick instead of killing them. A Florans legs are bent backwards, allowing them to jump extremely high, and have two toes with long claws set upon them. A Florans' hands have five fingers with large claws set into the tips of their fingers. Upon their hands rest several sacs, capable of marking something with pheremones- Local Florans can see these marks for miles, given they're from the same clutch and wind isn't throwing the scent off.
Florans, likely the reason for their names, reproduce through laying egg sacs in the ground, which burst up into pods which house 10-20 children. Florans, additionally, are extremely unintelligent- Non-Greenfingers usually don't exceed 90 IQ, and if raised in other societies, will really only spout nonsense pieces of knowledge they obtained from their schooling. However, they are incredibly good at soaking up most knowledge they hear, but are easily manipulated because of this.
In summary:
Florans are exoskeletal, small, insectoid hunter-killer people with a communal ant-like lifestyle. Their exoskeletons are made like the plants around them, and can blend in easily. Their legs are digitigrade (bent backwards like a dog), built to be able to walk on their clawed toes quietly and handle high jumps. Their hands have all five fingers, but linked to the tips of their digits are deadly, long claws- Making manipulation of delicate machinery difficult and guns somewhat harder to aim. Florans are extremely fast but only slightly stronger than other races, and can see well in the dark and the light. Florans can regenerate limbs, but require a large amount of food to do so. Florans cannot eat plants (only meat), and cannot drink alcohol. Florans communicate long distance through pheremones on their hands, which they can mark things with- Otherwise, they speak through clicks in their own dialect. Although smart hunters, they're technically dumb, being most don't exceed 90 IQ. Florans reproduce through egg sacs planted in the ground.
Additionally, Florans have members of their society dubbed Greenfingers, which are known by most people as the 'only smart ones'. Greenfingers are smaller than most other Florans, less muscular, lack claws, and more likely to loose limbs than others- However, they have an IQ above 90 and are able to manipulate machinery and guns with ease.. While any Floran can be psionic, most of them are Greenfingers due to a higher propensity to be psionic than others. Greenfingers are born with small sacs along their arms and legs which house pheremones, capable of sending widespread messages to any Florans within their clutch, given they're within ten miles or so- Who to fight, where to hunt, and so on. These can influence Florans, but not outright control them, which isn't normally a problem.
In short, Florans are as follows:
Pros:
* Fast and dexterous.
* Strong, to a extent. Legs are stronger than arms.
* Deadly claws.
* Can regenerate limbs.
* Natural armor that can protect from light slashing and blunt force trauma.
* Can jump 10-12 feet in a single jump.
* Can see well in the dark and in the light.
* Quiet.
* Can blend in easily, aslong as they match the color of the surroundings.
* Soak up knowledge well.
* Pheremones for marking locations of intrest for a clutch. Can be seen from a distance, should a Floran be familiar with the smell.
* Small target, due to averaging at 5'2".
* Insectoid. Freaky Bitches.
* [Greenfinger] High intelligence.
* [Greenfinger] Great psionic potential.
* [Greenfinger] Greater Pheremones allow for distant messaging and widespread command.
* [Greenfinger] Thumbs. Finally. Capable of creating detailed things.
Cons:
* Dumb as rocks- Unlikely to have an IQ over 90.
* No thumbs.
* Easily manipulated.
* Hungry all the time.
* Cannot eat plants.
* Alcohol is extremely poisonous to them.
* Limbs can be cut off at the joint where the exoskeleton meets flesh easily, due to lack of bone.
* [Greenfinger] Fragile and weak.
* [Greenfinger] No claws.
* [Greenfinger] Smaller than normal.
Society (Floran Concordat):
Two things matter in Floran society- Food and power.
Floran society, or the Floran Concordat, is a loose-knit band of massive, space-faring tribes that travel the stars in search of glory, and more importantly, food to expand their numbers with. Mainly, these 'tribes' are built up of small fleets of scrapped fighters and colony ships that can travel quickly and set up on new planets in a moment's notice. Though they rally under the same banner of the Floran state, fight constantly over territory, and if it were not for their high birthrate, would've likely torn themselves apart. While there's a near unlimited amount of tribes, the larger ones crumble under their own weight in a near endless cycle of destructive expansion.
The Concordat value warriors above all else, and their society reflects this- rallying around the strongest and largest Tribe in the collective. However, Florans tend to run into a hard barrier with the manufacture of weapons, due to the lack of bright minds, which leads them to be using inefficient, heavy melee weapons as their primary armament. Greenfingers, however, can balance this out- Due to their improved intelligence, they're able to create plans for higher quality weapons, buildings, and even plot repairs for crashed / scrapped ships. Due to this, the Florans are still able to remain a threat in their own manner, giving hordes of insects weapons capable of overthrowing planetary armies if they're unprepared.
Most Floran planets are found where old empires may have roamed, either destroyed by the insects themselves or choked out by their presence. Florans ignore obvious functions of abandoned buildings, creating their homes wherever they see fit- Most out of reeds and mud, or really whatever they can find. However, with the presence of a Greenfinger, some more established colonies are able to create rudimentary factories and mines, which suit the general populace well- And even reboot old factories to suit their whims. Due to this, most planets adopt a scorched earth policy when evacuating as to not empower the horde further.
If a Floran tribe establishes themselves on a planet with other civilized races, they tend to offer a ultimatum by the mouth of their Greenfinger leaders- Flesh-kinds will either join the horde in their conquest or perish as food alone. Florans have no qualms about eating other sentients should they not entertain their offers, but should they join the Concordat, are treated as one of their own, as each the best of their abilities. Non-Florans can become warriors in tribes, of course, but most become intellectuals to further the technology of the Tribe and assist their efforts to expand. Oddly egalitarian, the only thing a sentient cannot become is a Greenfinger- Otherwise, they're free to work and thrive, as long as they aren't eaten in a dispute.
However, this isn't well known- The chaos caused by a flash invasion tends to subtract all the valiant portions of the invasion, and the Florans' relations to other races is less than stellar. The only race that hasn't been harmed by the Florans is the glitch, mostly due to their mechanical nature. Cogs and oil don't taste very good.
The most recent target of the horde is the Hylotl, who are respected warriors by Florans standards- However, following the defeat of the Florans' armada at the Hylotl homeworld, most Florans hold a deep seated hatred towards the Hylotl for their embarrassing defeat.
