The United Systems
Overview
Formal Name: United Republic of Human Systems (URHS) Common Name: United Systems Languages: Solar Common (Primary), Galactic Common (Secondary), Various Human Languages (and their bastard descendents) Government: Federal Republic Leader: President Jonathan Warren Jr. Capital: Mars, Sol Population: 55,000,000,000 (approx.) The United Systems is the primary Human nation on the galactic scale, comprising a union of various Human-dominated systems into a once loose confederation, now a strong central republic. The defining features of such a nation include its extreme dominance of demographics by Humans, the sheer widespread cultural differences of its inhabitants, and a concept of personal liberty which is not often shown in other nations and other species. It is led by a dual branch government and its sitting head of government goes by President (alt. Premier or Chancellor). The United Systems focus on a citizen's duty to themselves and others, and emphasizes the individual's ability to serve the interests of Humanity. This is characterized by citizenship not being a citizen's birthright, but a title earned through civil service, military enlistment, or post-secondary education. Citizens are afforded rights such as the right to vote, the right to run for public office, and the right to free movement into United Systems borders.

History
The story of Humanity and the United Systems begins not with its founding, but long before. The 21st Century heralded many advancements for Humanity, but none were so extravagant as the first colony on Mars. In the mid-2000s, Humans had left Earth and its bound Luna for the blood-red rock simply on their doorstep. This was the first step in spreading a cornered Humanity across stars which they knew so much about, but had not the means to touch, to study from anywhere beyond lightyears away. But Mars was that first step, a dome which grew to a mere thirty inhabitants cultivated a new stage of Human expansion. If only the conditions on Earth had not been so grim. In the latter half of the 21st Century, Earth still relied on a system of nation-states, part of intricate and prohibiting alliances in a world which had all its land - and resources - claimed centuries ago.
But it did not yet reach that critical mass, the situation which was to come. The United Nations, the assembly of each state on Earth, still held hope that it could unite them in a common goal of outward expansion. And for a time, it worked. A webwork of Martian colonies, the first Humans on Venus, an increasing amount of affordable space habitats, and all the job opportunities within. They could only build so much with what they had. Who fired the first shot is lost to history, known potentially by very few, but the war that followed claimed millions of lives. In a decade-long conflict that rivaled the body counts of all wars past, Earth was left a polluted and destitute planet poisoned by warfare. The 2100s were met with little hope for a fledgling Humanity.
Project Starshot, an old program which had nearly been buried by the debris of the War, was unveiled by the 'victors' of the conflict. As these survivors continued to sustain the outward colonies within Sol as best they could, massive arks were constructed, refugees of war packed aboard. They were fitted with state-of-the-art engines, promised to reach the outer solar system and nearby stars within the decade. Millions of people were displaced into trajectories for Alpha Centauri, Sirius, and further. Their survival was never guaranteed, but the alternative was worse than the proposed fate at the end of their journey.
For the inhabitants of Earth and inner Sol, this bought time. Time to put aside differences of nation or culture and pour every ounce of being into researching a way out of the hole which had been made in centuries of digging. Terraforming began on Mars and Venus, affording in due time inhabitable neighbors. Leaps and bounds were gained in these 2100s, and a new Solar Republic was founded in place of what once existed. And it was this Solar Republic which was contacted by the arks which had been sent at the turn of the century. Not only did most reach their destinations unharmed and on schedule, inhabitable planets were found abroad. This Solar Republic now sat in its hegemony over a Human sphere, a term coined at the time by a famous politician.
The need for some connection between these colonies drove the Solar Republic to unilaterally fund an endeavor to develop feasible Faster-Than-Light (FTL) travel. This is the last factual information known of the Solar Republic, as in 2152, an Earth which had only just begun to properly recover was rendered completely uninhabitable. The Earth was described as turning aflame in an instant, accompanied by a light which rivaled Sol itself. And then every life on its surface was immediately extinguished. Inner Sol was once again left destitute and broken. The colonies abroad were completely cut off from all leadership.
Mars was forced to take the brunt of those who escaped, those in orbit or on Luna who fled in time to survive. Mars became the new Earth, the new pearl of what was left of Humanity. Its atmosphere had taken root, and with its population exploding, along with that of Venus and the hulking space habitats, it united into an oligarchic Solar nation. Its determination to salvage the wonders of Earth ensured the survival of FTL technology, which it used to make contact with colonies which now had been completely without contact for over a decade. These abroad colonies had formed their own alliances, and had their own ambitions. The side of Humanity which had not been present for nearly an entire century manifested in a series of wars which spanned many decades of developing warfare in a new environment of space and far off planets.
And in doing so, Humanity made contact with other sapients. Something that Humans, after so much desolation, had not even anticipated. 2300s brought the encounters of Apex, Avians, Hylotl, Glitch, Novakid, and, most detrimentally, Florans. While most species only saw Humanity as a fractured race in death throes due to infighting, a splinter confederation of Florans saw an opportunity to forcibly settle. Humanity was not prepared. In yet another war, a Humanity at eachothers' throats was forced to unite once again against a greater threat. The earliest days of the war saw extreme amounts of Human casualties, those who would not submit, as well as those who did, prisoners of war by a savage confederation of tribes. Humanity, the martial species they were, brought the massive sprawl of tactical knowledge and manufacturing from a near century of colonial infighting to drive back the Florans, burning entire settlements wholesale.
In this war, the United Systems as a concept was born. This name is sealed on the charter signed by the belligerents of the Colonial Wars, and established a framework which would evolve beyond a simple federation of Human states into a strong federal government based on Mars, the closest to the birthplace of Humanity available.
