Writers of this piece of lore: Khaws and cwab/dreams
Although having existed throughout most species’ history as ‘magic’ or other colloquial terms, ‘Psionics’ were formally discovered by a group of Apex scientists in 2407 during a failed sedatives experiment. The subject, after being injected with said sedative, spontaneously combusted. However, after an accident that left it killed, the researchers discovered that the body was not burned by the fire, but demonstrated control over it, with residual embers clinging to its body and only detaching after rigor mortis ended. After an extensive autopsy and study, the subject’s DNA had been found to have been extensively modified through an unknown source of radiation. The element that was discovered to radiate such changes was “Disrubium”, named after one of the Apex researchers, as well as its disruptive properties.
‘Psionics’ is only known to occur via a roughly one-in-a-billion chance, and have only been discovered to be latent, so far. No cases of a newborn possessing psionics have been recorded, and weaponization of it (outside of latent powers activating) has proven fruitless. However, said powers occur in all shapes and sizes; whether it be extensive control over electricity, or making someone buckle and succumb to nightmarish visions. These powers, when not finely tuned to a specific aspect of reality, have proven to be dangerous to the user as well as others.
Psykers themselves are typically marked by a series of malformations and odd habits; such as parts of their body resembling their abilities, insanity, other severe mental illness, or overall physical weakness. They can manifest their abilities through specific incantations, objects, or through their hands (hands being the most common insofar, as aspects of specific abilities appear most frequently on the palms or backhands). Certain abilities, like those shown in various galactic pop culture films, are unable to be performed; i.e., flight and raising the dead. Records suggest psykers have been able to grow extremely powerful with their ability, with one prime factor; time. The more time a psyker has had their ability, the more finely tuned they become with it, and the more they are able to bend and manipulate it before succumbing to physical exhaustion and psychic backlash.
However, Apex scientists have also made a very recent discovery. They have crafted their own Psykers, in a way. 'Imperfect Psions' are the result of extensive (and expensive) genetic testing. Although in their current state, many of them are nearly brain-dead, freakish mutants, the Miniknog are making progress..
tl;dr:
- Psionics are genetic-based powers
- All powers are latent
- All psykers have their own mental & physical defects corresponding to their powers
- Power must be specific (i.e. pyrokinesis, electrokinesis, hydrokinesis)
- Psionics cannot be weaponized through cybernetics or machinery (yes, including Glitch and other robots)
- Powers are primarily developed through time and use
- Powers are mentally, and physically, draining
- 'Imperfect Psions' are a thing, and extremely hard to make with very little success
