The Mire is a dump. The settlement got its start after a devastating conflict over the industry located at [city] left it in complete ruins. Refugees fleeing the intense urban combat made their way into the deadly swamps and cobbled together a tent city. Residents irked out a shaky existence hidden away from the powerful armies around them, biding their time until their true home is rebuilt. In time, the conditions proved too inhospitable for many, and much of the population moved on- though a scant few have taken to living rough and remain. For now, the near lawlessness of the place makes it a viable hub of activity for all manner of individuals. In relative terms, the Mire is within 10 lightyears of the frontline, meaning people fleeing the war pass through the area often. It's a decent place to hide for someone really desperate to stay hidden. The ruins of the old robotics factory are claimed to be haunted, but landmines have done more harm than any ghosts. Watch your step.

"Food and clean water are hard to come by in a place like this if you don't know where to look. The online black markets of the Civil War means electricity is essential to life as much as nutrients and fluids. One could purify their own water, hunt their own food, but this is time consuming and learned skills. You wanna eat? Make some friends, or pay the hefty tolls the 'businessmen' charge." -From a bulletin explaining The Mire to refugees, January 2419
