Basic Details
The Jûen (pronounced Juun, similar to june) are a race of bipedal humanoids originating from the planet Hajaka, in the Ikkh system, which consists of five planets and is located within the sector of Ro-233. They are a technocratic society, with a heavy emphasis on the knowledge of the individual, while maintaining an ultimate “Greater Good” system of thinking, where the individual is expected to provide for their society, so that the society may benefit them in turn.
The Jûen, as opposed to a proper leader, have a council of sixty (or more) individuals made up of city leaders of their individual planet, and a “higher” council which is comprised of representatives from each planet to discuss what is best for the race. Decisions from the “higher” council are typically passed to the power grouping, who may vote and discuss upon it to introduce ideas or correct any mistakes that may have been made by the much smaller group above them.
Their society is noted for an almost total lack of religion, and instead relies on logical decisions and agreements between groups of power to make them. While religion is still allowed within their society, it is to have no effect on government actions or an individual's status on their social groups. This is to prevent biased views among the political leaders, which would ultimately lead to a better outcome from their decisions.
Due to the chlorine-based planet the Jûen initially inhabited, and its semi-abundant ammonia oceans, the Jûen home planet of Hajaka is practically overrun with Flora that spits out Chloral Hydrate and splits whatever water there is to become oxygen, which makes up another portion of the planet’s atmosphere. It is due to this fact, that the planet has an over-average amount of Chloral Hydrate in the air, that metals (and alloys after their own industrial age) which can resist or are immune to the corrosion of the plant's output gas are more far more common and useful. Things like platinum (and similar metals or alloys) along with aluminium are the most abundant metals, with a secondary industry of the refinement and creation of other metals and alloys sparking in the last two hundred years to advances in science and industry allowing for chlorine free zones to be built for the purpose of these industries. Though, this is notably more powerful in the modern age due to the expansion to other planets allowing refinement to become a much easier process, due to a more “normal” atmosphere. The third most abundant market is agriculture due to the abundance of ammonia allowing for the rapid and healthy growth of crops, which are promptly shipped out by companies along with various fertilizers and crop treatments.
Because of their existence as a technocratic society, the Jûen have a heavy focus on the education of the individual. This means that a large portion of their budgets tend to go towards education programs and schools, to ensure that both the public and private sectors receive fair and even educations. Education is offered at any age above five, and below the age of 190. The cost for such an education is typically very low, with vast amounts of social programs ensuring that even the poorest of families are able to afford schooling for themselves and their children. In fact, additional years and degrees are heavily encouraged by the government, and will often times ensure that the receiver will have a higher position and/or respect in their society due to a higher level of education. Even those born with genetic and mental deficiencies are encouraged to receive what education they can, and are given places in life so that they can provide, even if it's at a lesser level. This usually includes menial tasks that would be mind numbingly boring for the standard citizen, or assisting other citizens in their day to day lives should they require help.
General Anatomy
Owing to their evolution upon a planet where the Flora primarily exhaled chlorine gas, and split what water there was into oxygen, the Jûen possess a strange biology that has rendered them more suitable for surviving in hostile environments than the average bipedal humanoids.
The race's average heights are of rather diminutive stature due to their strange upbringing, with the female's height ranging from about 4’ 10” to 5’ 2” (147cm to 157cm) on average. Due to the sexual dimorphism present in most humanoid mammals, the males have a generally larger size, which ranges from 5’ 4” to 5’ 6” (162cm to 167cm), placing them slightly taller than most of their female counterparts. Other than their height, they possess relatively similar sexual dimorphism compared to most mammals.
Their biology has a strange penchant for granting the rather short race twice as many of certain organs, or extremities. This is mostly seen from an outside standpoint, where one can see that they possess four arms capable of performing tasks with the same efficiency as a standard humanoid set of limbs, albeit the hands possess three fingers and a thumb, with each of these being a half inch longer than the human's fingers. Also visible on their exterior are four eyes, which are layered almost right on top of each other at a flat angle, each possessing a black sclera accompanied by a brighter iris. These eyes possess a form of “eyeshine”, which, using methods similar to other animal's eyes, allow them better vision in the dark, granting them a minor nocturnal advantage. On their interior, their lungs are affected by the penchant for doubling parts of the body. They possess four, albeit slightly smaller and in a slightly different positioning than a human's due to the increased size of their abdomen area to fit these. Two of these are used for processing oxygen, while the other two are for processing chlorine gas, and then exhaling chloral hydrate. Their legs are, surprisingly enough, mostly similar to a standard humanoid. The only differences are that the knees are double jointed, with a natural resting position that appears to be bent back slightly. Their feet are mildly different, with the end of the toes almost being similar to claws- of which they possess four, with each being about the normal size of a human's. In place of hair, they possess tendrils of a sinew-like material that is typically brought together into strands, similar to dreadlocks or other hairstyles that would require such styling. This allows them to lose heat faster, which means they can manage somewhat higher temperatures, like that of their home planet.
Within their mouth, they possess twin tongues, which appear to be split down the middle of the two, similar to a certain cosmetic surgery done by humans. However, it can be noted that their tongues are entirely split by default, and connected to the base of their mouth by two individual frenulum linguae. Their teeth are an even stranger story, where each of their canines are replaced by a trio of them, as opposed to have a singular one for each portion of the mouth, they now possess three. The second tooth in these lineups are semi-hollow and curved in a manner similar to fangs, in the sense that they possess the ability to inject a venom from a gland located within their gums, above or below the tooth. The venom uses a cocktail of compounds similar to that of the komodo dragon, as it causes blood pressure to lower and heavy fatigue to set into the victim, causing them to collapse after up to five minutes, depending the size of the individual afflicted. After the development of their telepathic empathy, the need to express emotions through tones and facial expressions became obsolete, as it could easily be done telepathically. This lead to the facial muscles and the portion of the brain that controls expressions and tone to atrophy until they were unable to outwardly express themselves through these mannerisms, and as such, always sound like they have a dull monotone and a somewhat blank facial expression. This can be rectified, but only through training similar to that of an actor's, where more expressive races assist them with regaining their ability to outwardly express once more.
Because of their evolution upon a chlorine based world, the Jûen possess thicker skin that is naturally resistant or immune to acidic compounds that could irritate or even injure the average humanoid. This, accompanied by their generally hardy nature, has given them a lifespan close to twice that of a human's, with their own medicine allowing them to live up to 220 years if they're lucky, with the average lifespan being about 190 to 200 years.
Their biology notably includes features “borrow” from arachnid families, which would explain their odd appearance that seems to encourage doubling certain portions of the body. These features include near microscopic hairs covering their bodies, which allows them a sense of direction in the event that their (partially defunct) vestibular system is rendered useless in a situation, it would allow them better balance and prevent them from hitting objects that a humanoid would normally. This is most useful in the dark, due to the incapability of the visual system working with the vestibular system to keep one's balance properly. The combination system allows them to wear clothes and maintain a good sense of balance while doing so, however, it also means that if the hairs are to be burned/damaged, it will throw the individual's balance off severely until they are regrown, even with the use of the vestibular system.
Jûen blood, which contains trace elements of lithium chloride, is used in a similar manner to an arachnid's. It is used as a hydrostatic pressure system, with the individual being able to control their heart rate to in then control the pressure. This allows them alternative forms of locomotion involving changing the pressure, which is usually something relatively low. By changing the pressure, by up to four times, allowing them to sprint much faster, and jump higher than most humanoid races. It has been recorded, that under such pressure, they can bolt at speeds up to 40 mph, sending them like lightning away from the opposing force. On top of this, they suffer far less fatigue from such actions due to not using the muscles in their legs to do the work for them, instead relying upon the blood to do it. However, there is a downside (and perhaps even another benefit) to this. When they are cut, and they have increased the pressure of their blood by forcing their heart rate to increase, they can bleed out significantly faster. This, however, poses the benefit of them doing the exact opposite in the event of an injury, and instead allows them to slow down the bleeding to a rate that will significantly slow their body, but also potentially save their own life. Along with these arachnid features, Jûen have been noted to act erratically under the influence of high concentrations of caffeine, in a manner that can be described as “drunk”. Other drugs affect them in similar manners that they affect typical humanoids.
Large deposits of chitin grow on the semi-arachnid body of the Jûen, forming segmented armor plating that prove to be effective natural armor for the speedy predators. The chitin is typically colored dark grey to jet black due to high concentrations of melanin in the plating, which is located primarily on the front of the Jûen. It starts at their feet, where it takes the form of naturally sharp claws, breaking and then crossing across their shins and up to the thigh/inner thigh area, preventing animals from biting the vital ligaments and veins there. Further up, it forms segmented “eight packs” across their belly, stretching all the way up to and across the pecs where it once more breaks, until it reaches the shoulders and spreads close to the base of the neck. From there it goes up the neck, where it can protect the front and sides from bites and slashes in the form of segmented armor, preventing movement loss. Across their arms it is typically found on the front of the forearms, and then down to their fingers, where it takes the form of chitinous claws that, like those on the feet, are naturally sharp. On the back it stretches from the shoulders and down the spine, ending above the buttocks. It segments in the center, where a separate layer of plating covers the spine itself. The chitin is strong, and naturally able to resist or deter biting, slashing, and stabbing across the areas it covers. Additionally, the palms of their hands have a similar segmented chitin, although this set possesses microscopic hooks which can dig into porous surfaces and allow the individual to hold onto it better, or climb and “stick” to aforementioned surfaces. The variety of use for their chitinous claws is somewhat large, but the two primary uses appear to be: as offensive weapons, and to spin silk from glands located in their forearms. These glands produce a high concentration of strong silk that can be turned into many different articles of clothing, or webbing, and is typically used by the modern Jûen to form clothing noon temporary homes, and even temporarily mend wounds by applying constant pressure.
Natural Abilities
The Jûen are a race that naturally possess telepathic empathy, or “true” empathy which allows them to share their emotions to other sentients through mental contact. However, by default, this only applies to those within their own race, likely due to the fact that they developed the same brain capacity that allowed for such an action in the first place.
While it is possible for them to connect to other sentient races (or anything with a high enough level of brain power, for that matter), it is a process which requires many trials and may lead to great tribulations due to the fragile mental state it can leave the recipient and Jûen in. The process requires the Jûen performing the act to earn a large amount of trust from the recipient of the connection, with the feeling being mutual. It is a process that cannot be forced upon another, due to the fact that it requires great concentration and relaxation from both parties. The mental linkage is a fragile thing, which can be disrupted by most things that nullify abilities, save for metals or materials which will only temporarily disabled the effects. At first, the sensations coming from the Jûen will be overpowering for the recipient, even going as far as to alter their emotional state if the sensations are strong enough. After close to a week, however, it will normalize and become a subtle feeling of the other's emotions. Breaking this link causes massive amounts of metal fatigue for both parties, and may even cause mental disorders or injuries due to the nature of the connection.
Miscellaneous
Jûen music is noted as almost always missing lyrics, due to the flat monotones of their own voices interrupting the flow of most pieces of music. Because of this fact, their music typically consists of just the instruments or beats themselves, often times to great success due to the nature of them doing it for thousands of years. Do not be mistaken, however, live performances are considered powerful pieces of entertainment due to the telepathic empathy the race shares, with the actors and story readers being able to share the intended feeling of the story or music through their empathic connections. Though, it is rumored there are recordings from before the Jûen developed their telepathic empathy, which reportedly had their full range of vocal emotions, albeit slightly melodramatic.
In a close fitting tradition with their musical culture, Jûen often partake in powerful performances and interpretive dances that rely upon their natural telepathic empathy to assist the crowd in understanding the scene, allowing them to portray settings in a much easier manner. However, it is often filled with overly exaggerated or stoic displays where the actors may move wildly, or barely move at all. This ties into the race's expressions through their bodies, with their hands and movements often becoming an important part of both verbal and nonverbal communication with others, including those outside of their race.
Due to their exhalation of chloral hydrate, it is dangerous to breath in very close proximity to an individual of the Jûen race due to the fact that the gas can cause irritation of the lungs, and coughing fits. The effect is amplified and even poses a threat towards the eyes or skin in close contact, such as face-to-face.
Also because of their chlorine breathing nature, it is a requirement to occasionally have sessions with a respirator equipped with chlorine gas canisters, which will alleviate stress on the smaller oxygen-breathing pair of lungs after trips outside of an environment built of them. Failing to do so can often times lead to fatigue and pain for the individual, due to the overworking of their respiratory system.
